I think I stopped following comics after I read Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN series and never looked back at super hero comics again.
Yeah, Neil Gaiman's Sandman was really tremendous, but if you've given up on superheroes, you've really missed out on a lot. J.M. Strazinsky of Babylon 5 fame had a really good book out called
Rising Stars a few years back, and recently had a great run on Fantastic Four. Brian Michael Bendis took a cop's-eye view of superheroes and villains in his book
Powers. Kurt Busiek took the average person's view of heroes in his
Rising Stars series. Other "real writers" such as Greg Rucka and Brad Meltzer have also done some great stuff in the DC Universe. Even Gaiman returned to the genre with an alternative Marvel Universe storyline called
1602 and an
Eternals mini-series (Which really wasn't that good). There's still a lot of crap out there, but there's still plenty of good stuff to be found. You just have to have the tenacity, like the guy who wades through the dumpster by my shop, to look for the good stuff.
