I know the LotR movie characters have already been suggested, but how about the following from the old Rankin/Bass cartoon, "The Hobbit"?:
Gandalf
Smaug
Gollum
any goblin

Cartoons don't really work as stencils (lines too thin, features not connected). So you have a better chance seeing the movie versions of these LotR characters.

Well, you don't have to draw just the lines. You could fake a light source and have the features be either in light or shadow. It takes longer, and sometimes they end up not looking right, (and you may end up scrapping the whole drawing once, or twice) but don't just give up. A few of my patterns worked out that way, tossing the whole thing and starting over.

Those goblins from that cartoon were pretty sick!

That's true, JP... it's possible to fake some shadows to make a cartoon character look 3D. I've seen you do some like that.

But that can be tough. When it comes to animated things, 3D characters like those from the Pixar movies are easier since they come with shading included.
