If you want a gernal overall tip, here is one from my head/face:

If you're choosing a pattern that is the least bit detailed then for the love of Jesus and Jesus' children, choose a big pumpkin!!! Then you won't have to shrink your pattern on a photocopier. If you thought the pattern was detailed when you saw it on the site, wait until you carve the little detailed parts after it's been shrunk down to fit your tiny poopy pumpkin.

Go big! Not only that but bigger pumpkins are more visible from farther away. :)

I know it's pretty much common sense, but good to think about when you're picking out a pattern and a pumpkin to go with it. Word!

Great post and I usually try to use the biggest pumpkin I can carry.

However, I think Ryan should have a smallest prize.

Who can carve a stencil in one of those mini pumpkins or something.

They'd have my respect.

smaller pumpkins have thinner meat means less scrapping thinner walls make a better carving

Hahah yes! That would be awesome. I'd like to see napoleon on a mini pumpkin!
