anyone a pumpkin growing expert?

I have seeds and a pretty good farmer friend who grows pumpkins for me but they always seem to be ripe and picked at the end of August. It's still hot here at that time and I generally lose a few and am always in a constant state of concern about losing more.

What is the ideal time to plant seeds? or start seedlings?

I grow lots of pumpkins and they ripen at the end of August, beginning of Sept. I actually pick them when green and just starting to turn orange. Then I place them together away from the patch in the sun to ripen. I can monitor them better and keep the rodents away. I loose a couple but for the most part it works. When they are really ripe and dry, I put some in the cellar for Thankgsgiving and Christmas carvings. Hey, what's Christmas without a carved pumpkin??!!
