So I got some brown paper bags and stared making some luminaries, but I wish they were brighter. You can't really see the stencils too well. Any one have any tips? Has anyone tried it with a different color bag? It seems like they need more contrast somehow.

Compare them with the first one that I did of Leatherface

The black ones highlight the pattern better by a factor of 10

Its hard enough glueing the tracing paper inside them. Tin foil would probably blind me

What color are the black bags on the inside? And are you gluing paper on the back of the stencils for a color or something?

Bags are white on the inside and black on the outside. Recycled.
Ordinary tracing paper is then glued behind the stencil to help diffuse the light

I tried these last night on brown lunch bags.
I had to downsize a few of the patterns due to size.

I just taped the pattern on the front and cut it out with an x-acto knife.

Like some of you had said, I guess the brown bag lets too much light out elsewhere other then the "holes" intended.

I painted them black last night and going to see how that fairs later on tonight when I can light them in a dark room.

Yes, I put a piece of cardboard inside the bag, so as not to cut the back side.

Just used the exacto blade to carve.

Photo Copiers work best you can put the pattern in then shrink the size to what ever you need

Some of them I didn't have to, they fit on the bag just perfectly.
(I bought the regular "lunch bags" from my local grocery store)

The others I tossed in my copy machine and found the setting to shrink to __%

I shrunk most of them to 70% and they fit, with plenty of room to still see detail.
