I go over mine with a marker. When we gut pumpkins it involves lots of guts and a hose. The transfer would never stay on with that kind of abuse. Been doing that for some time now. Sharpie works well and doesn't come off.

Another stunning stacked display! How does this year compare... in terms of your satisfaction and the people's reaction? We had fewer people than last year which was a bit surprising to me because the weather was much better this year. Of course we still have our "regulars" who say it wouldn't be H...

We were only able to get 90 done this year but it still looked good.

They're on the smallish side around here. Just got our supply this past weekend. That means I really need to get off the computer and start transferring patterns.

Patti's 2009 pumpkins

This was predominately the work of two people. My son's girlfriend also contributed quite a few carvings. My son had more fun with the propane torch we had to use to get everything lit due to the rain and wind Halloween night. It really wasn't a great year. It got too warm and too wet and we lost ab...

We started carving yesterday (Monday). We carve each pumpkin, put in the candle, sprinkle a little cinnamon on the lid, cover loosely with a plastic bag, then put the carved pumpkin back out on the deck. Then I consult an oracle, sacrifice a chicken to the weather gods, and hope for the best. The be...

Can I just dump them into the garden and mulch them up with the dirt?? Yep. Believe it or not this pile was nothing more than an orange spot by spring. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mswillie/2945310437/in/set-72157608064397210/ The guts were gone long before that. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mswill...

We've always put cinnamon on our lids. Can't say it ever helped stop shriveling but the yard sure does smell good when we've got them all lit.

It rained here yesterday too and we did lose the patterns on three of the pumpkins. It looks like it rained so hard that the edge may have lifted and the fixative and transfer peeled off in one sheet. No big deal though, we'll just draw them back on. We actually live relatively close to each other a...

I got some saral paper and fixative and I can say I really like the technique. We already had quite a few patterns on before we tried it but I can say that we'll most likely be going this route next year. It saves me anywhere from 5-15 minutes per pumpkin since I don't have to go back and re-ink lik...

We have 100 of the thickest toughest pumpkins we've faced in years. It'll be a challenge to get them all carved by Halloween. We're going to give it our best shot though. :D

I had forgotten I entered the contest until today. When the envelope showed up yesterday I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was for. I picked the pumpkin king simply because it's an easy pattern that looks really good and my thought was that the last minute and less experienced carvers...
