I have a large drill bit it is about the circumference of a nickle, i use tht to drill in the bottom to put the candle in, I use the small white "household candles" in my pumpkins and gereally put 2 in each they last 3/4 hr.s or so, while the four packs you find in the stores are about 1.49 a pk, I found that the exact same candles come in boxes of 72 and are used for jewish holidays, so if your super market has a kosher section you can usually find them there for around 7.99 a box, (about 11 cents ea.) I get mine when there will be an upcoming jewish holiday then they go on sale I got a few boxes for 5$ each and they will last you a couple years depending how many kins you do.

PM used to sell a large drill in their kits. One end was for the size like you are describing, and the other end was the same size as a votive.

I've been using floating vegetable oil candles, inside clear glass mugs for a few years now. They can be used from year to year, don't tip over, or blow out.
