Walpurgisnacht is "the night of of the witches" in the Harz Mountains of northern Germany (Half-o-Ween to us). The festivities are based on ancient folklore and on the eve of May Day, the witches were believed to fly on their brooms to the Brocken (Bald Mountain), the highest peak in northern Germany. Together with devils, they dance and celebrate the arrival of spring.
My great-grandfather was from the nearby village of Goslar, Germany (think: storybooks and gingerbread houses) and the town just loves it's witches. I even brought one home with me...
