Each year I make a mix CD of Halloween tunes. They make good party favors and gifts for friends. Also keeps me in the spirit to play in the car while I'm making trips to the pumpkin patch.

I like to have a decent mix of classic songs we all know, remixes/covers of those classics, and a few newer and lesser known tracks that still fit the Halloween theme.

Does anyone have a unique song suggestion that is a must for my next mix CD? Here's the track list from my 2007 mix to get us on the same (sound)wavelength:

01. "Halloween Hootenanny" by Zacherle
02. "This is Halloween" by Panic at the Disco
03. "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo
04. "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads
05. "The Boogie Monster" by Gnarls Barkley
06. "Monster Mash" by Bobby Boris Pickett
07. "Witch Queen Of New Orleans" by Redbone
08. "The Addams Family Theme" by Joey Gaynor
09. "Hell" by Squirrel Nut Zippers
10. "Ghostbusters Theme" by Ray Park Jr.
11. "I'm Your Boogie Man" by KC and The Sunshine Band
12. "Grim Grinning Ghosts" by Barenaked Ladies
13. "Thriller" by Michael Jackson
14. "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon
15. "The Munsters Theme" by Los Straitjackets
16. "Dont Fear The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult
17. "Halloween Theme" by John Carenter
18. "Happy Halloween" by Zacherle

Great responses so far, thanks so much! These songs you're listing are just the sort of vibe I'm looking for.

Memorable songs from spooky themed movies... songs by famous (and not always spooky) artists that have a spooky theme... songs by typically spooky artists that are especially Halloween related... classic older spooky songs... classic spooky songs remade by newer artists... all that kind of stuff.

I think a good mix CD has a bit of new and old, light and dark, fast and slow, funny and serious....

There are enough Christmas song compilations on the market to choke eight tiny reindeer. It takes a shovel and some digging to unearth Halloween music, but if you know where to look, you realize there's a LOT to be had.

How about some of the songs from Nightmare Before Christmas such as "This is Halloween"?

My whole family makes a Halloween CD to share every year. My mom started the tradition. So there are TONS of great songs out there to make a fantastically chilling cd. Here are just a few that haven't already been mentioned:

Theme to Shaun of the Dead
Big Bad Wolf - From Teen Wolf
What Should I Be? - Garfield Halloween Special
Exorcist Theme
People Are Strange, and Cry Little Sister from Lost Boys
Scooby Doo
Dexter Theme
Down With The Sickness - Richard Cheese version
Season of the Witch
Beetlejuice Theme
Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones (check out the Neptunes remix!)
Apocalypse Please - Muse
Mad Mad World - Gary Jules (Donnie Darko)
Boogie Man - Rob Zombie
Cemetery Gates - Pantera
Cemeteries of London - Coldplay
Su-Su-Suddio - Phil Collins (a nod to American Psycho)
Keep My Grave Clean - B.B. King
Boogie Monster - Gnarls Barkley
Sectret - Pierces
Ghost Town - The Specials
Susperia
Theme from Return of the Living Dead

That's all I could think of at the moment. There are just SOOO many fantastic songs out there. Whether you're going for straight movie/tv references, cartoons, or just an overall spooky vibe. Also be on the lookout for songs that have horror movie quotes interwoven in the music. Those are fun too!

A few more classics for consideration on Patch Master Volume One:

I Was A Teenage Werewolf - The Cramps
Halloween - The Dead Kennedys
People Are Strange - Echo & The Bunneymen
Love Like Blood - Killing Joke

I have just realised (these songs apart) how much crap I have on my iPod but I just can't bring myself to delete some of it..... even though I doubt I'll ever listen to it again.

For classical input, try:

O Fortuna - Carmina Burana - Orff (The Omen)
Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor (Used in a lot of of films - GUS mentions it elsewhere in the forum too))
Danse Macabre - Saint-Saen (Buffy etc)
Grohg - Aaron Copland (About corpses being brought back to life)

You guys know your stuff, I'm impressed. I was worried that I used up a lot of the big ones with my last mix (Thriller, Monster Mash, Addams Family AND Munster themes).

But there's really a ton out there, and if you're making a CD to share with Halloween loving friends, they'll probably appreciate getting to experience some of the lesser known tracks. We all love "Monster Mash" but it's pretty much included on every Halloween CD ever.

Another way to decide which tracks to include on your CD might be to pick ones that fit the theme of your party, costume, or pumpkin carvings...

Since my CD will likely be the soundtrack to my Zombie Pumpkins carving party, I can tell you now that I'll likely include AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" and the theme from "Little Shop of Horror", because I made pumpkin patterns for both of those this year.

A couple of other faves of mine are:
Marie Laveau- Bobby Bare (more humorous than spooky)
It Must Be Halloween- Andrew Gold (kind of a kiddie song, but I like it anyway)
Black Magic Woman- Santana

That Patrick Bateman was so-so-so wrong about Su-Su-Suddio. No wonder he had crap business cards!

I am actually on iTunes going through the suggestions I've never heard and it looks like this thread is going to cost me some money.

Oh yeah, final suggestion Venus in Furs - Velvet Underground

Oh, oh! I LOVE Blue Oyster Cult!! My current fav of thiers is Veteran of the Psychic Wars. :D

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Bing Crosby singing "The Headless Horseman" from Disney's Legend of Sleepy Hollow? That is my favorite kid friendly Halloween song, but I haven't had any luck finding it yet. :( Anyone?

These are great suggestions! I'm going off to fill my mp3.
