How do you all pick your pumpkins? What makes a 'good carving pumpkin'?

I normally buy mine depending on size and weight.

And also, can you use regular pumpkins in home made Pumpkin Pie? I heard the smaller ones are ideal for cooking?

 I'm confused.. I'm planning on making a completely home made pumpkin pie for our Halloween Party

Thanks in advance!

I usually try to find a pumpkin that of course sits straight and has a stright level side for carving. As far as size, i like to get medium to large ones. Easy enough to handle and not to heavy. I also heard that the small pie pumpkins are perfect for baking and the seeds are supposed to be better too. :)
