I actually did a report in Jr. High School about the origins of the Jack-O'-Lantern, and carved several vegetables and gourds, including a turnip for it. :D

I watched Fear the Walking Dead, and it was okay. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. I understand the idea that the pace would be relatively slow, given the setting at the start of the outbreak, but it was glacier-like for the first couple of episodes. I kinda hate that the L.A. group is learning t...

I wish I could argue that it isn't THAT hard or tedious to make your own stencils... but it really kinda is. Unfortunately, it really is an art. The number of patterns that Ryan has put together is dumbfounding. I'm lucky to put together five of my own stencils per season. I can give you the basic i...

Thanks to all for the condolences and the encouragement. That is what makes this forum great! Despite thoughts of taking it easy, maybe doing pre-made stencils, in the last couple of days, I've been stealing moments from my days, looking at images, thinking, "yeah... I could turn that into a pattern...

Back after a year off. Real life, huh? Spoils all the fun. What's happened since then? Well, two years ago, my time was so limited, I think I only carved three foam pumpkins. Then came the tragedy. For those of you used to the temporary, in-the-moment-ness of carving real pumpkins, you may not under...

Thanks for the continued great comments!

High praise from the Patch Master!!! Ryan, if those patterns of Cushing and Lee were already here, you'd have saved me a TON of work!!! Looking forward to seeing and carving them when you put them out!

Thanks for all the encouraging comments. I'm glad you all have liked what I've managed to do this year! I know a lot of folks consider Bela Lugosi as THE Dracula when they think of the character. Not me. As a child, one of my great memories was watching the Saturday afternoon horror showcases from l...

I think they look great. I have the same problem with transfer paper. Maybe it is all old stock. Whatever. I switched over to sticker paper. I'm much happier now. Plus, sometimes I can reposition without having to start completely over, or I can just move a part of the stencil by cutting it free fro...

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Got my second pumpkin carved, and I've become hooked on making my own patterns. Figured since I'm probably only going to get four done this season, I can probably handle that! And, for this photo, NOT a cell phone pick, AND prop-age! http://i135.photobucket.com/al...

Greetings all! I wasn't sure that I'd be posting anything this season. In the last year, I got a pretty big promotion at work, now in management, and time for anything not absolutely necessary has been at a premium, and, then, in the last month, I broke my foot. You wouldn't think a broken foot woul...

The bad news, first. On Halloween night, at our house, we had... 0. That's right. Zero. Goose egg. Nada. Nothing. Sure, we've been averaging 1 to 5 over the last decade, but zero was still pretty shocking. The weather, the mid-week landing of Halloween, and the fact that there were only two houses o...

Squirrels. Yeah. This is a major factor in me using foam. We have enough squirrels in the neighborhood that you can put out a pumpkin and within a few hours, they have virtually destroyed them. I get it - what we see as decorations, they see as sustenance. Can't really argue with them. I've heard th...

Not being a Star Wars fan, I have no real thought on this, but my best friend is a huge Star Wars fan.

He was NOT a fan of the prequels, and thinks that maybe it won't be so bad for Lucas to not be in charge of future films.
